A Sad Day for the Foreign Service

News of the car bombing in Karachi hit awfully close to home for Benny and I today. A foreign service officer was among those killed. It just takes my breath away to think of losing a loved one to such senseless violence. Jamaica seems very far away from all that, and I feel like a bit of a cop-out for not rushing out to volunteer for service in the Middle East. Luckily for all of us, there are courageous, capable people out there putting themselves on the line just to keep the region open. See fsoglobetrotter.blogspot.com for a colleague doing just that. My boss usually says this as a joke at work, but in this case it seems appropriate to say seriously: "Thanks for your work for peace."
